Fixing Steep Stairs - Where To Start
Traditional Cape Cod homes have narrow steep stairs with very shallow stair treads which can feel awkward to step on. These stair treads are only about 8" deep compared to a standard of 11".
The treads and risers are removed to expose the stringers which will be re-used. Older treads are usually brittle and dried out making them poor candidates for re-use since they will be prone to splitting.

The stringers were re-cut to angle the riser board back and the new treads were allowed to over hang a bit further. This took the treads from an 8" to a 10" tread making the stairs feel much safer to step on without changing the dimensions of the stair case.
A new banister was also added to really update the front entry way of this home and bring the spindle spacing up to code.

A Comfortable Chair
This oversized cedar chair is wonderful for sitting outdoors and it is easier to get out of than a low Adirondack style chair.

A Very Special Project - Unfinished
We were commissioned to build this walnut cross. It is shown here without any finish applied.
Linseed oil is being applied to create a natural finish for this walnut cross.

The blank wall over the pulpit is where the cross will be installed. The windows will also be cased after stained glass is installed.
The wall behind the choir loft is completed with the installation of the walnut cross, casing the new windows and hanging the banner the church had in storage.

Boats Need Carpentry Too
The original cabin sole had deteriorated due to moisture from the bilge. This new teak and holy cabin sole was built to withstand the moisture by fiberglassing its back. It is finished with teak oil.
A Blank Wall Transformed - Book Case
A blank wall was transformed into an entertainment center complete with book cases and a fireplace with custom built cabinets. The center section over the fire place pulls forward to mount a flat panel television.
This mantel is completely custom built to match the existing style of this Queen Ann style home.
