It' s November in Michigan. Why not re-build your deck now? It'll look great all winter and as soon as the first warm days of spring arrive, you will be ready to enjoy your deck and not miss a day of our beautiful Michigan summer waiting for your new deck.
This deck has had a couple of incarnations. Originally it was a 4' balcony off the second floor slider. Next, it was extended out to 16' and converted to a roof for a screen porch around ground floor patio. Flat roofs in Michigan are difficult to maintain and this one was no exception. The home owners wanted to improve the views from both the second and ground floors by reducing the railing's and support structure's mass to allow the woods to be seen with less obstruction.
Our solutions are simple:
Remove the post support structure that created the screen porch framing and supported the deck, replacing it with a post and beam support structure.
Remove the decking and replace it with new 5/4 treated deck lumber.
Remove the old lattice rail structure (which does not meet code) and replace it with a wood and stainless steel cable fill rail system. A quick note about cable railings. The last update to Michigan Residential Building Code changed some of the definitions and restrictions on railings; however, the new code is not clearly defined. We work closely with your local building inspection officials to determine what they will accept before we begin the project so there are no surprises.
